Internship experience at Centre for Cities
"As an intern at the Centre for Cities I was able to utilise my research skills and became comfortable developing critical policy expertise as well as working with large data sets in Excel. The added benefit of working at the Centre is the experience of working with others to interpret evidence into concise, structured discussion and policy messages. During the internship I researched case studies for reports, presented to the team, briefed colleagues on particular policy areas and attended external events.
"My role was extended into a temporary Research Assistant position and I worked with the team to take a Cities Survey project from the concept to the final report, wrote case studies for the report Grand Designs, regarding policies for the built environment, and developed a research note on the role of universities in city economies. A short stint at the Centre is a great way to engage in critical independent research into public policy and the economic development of cities."
Olivia Varley-Winter, Intern June - October 2010, Research Assistant October - December 2010
"The internship at Centre for Cities is an enjoyable and rewarding experience. As an intern you will be involved in a range of projects, including working on reports with partner cities and contributing to research projects. In addition to the extensive research tasks, you will have opportunities to conduct presentations and attend external events.
"I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the Centre for Cities and I developed my research, analytical and communication skills. This resulted in Vision Twentyone (a social research consultancy) offering me a job. If any graduate is looking for some work experience to forge a career in policy, then I could not recommend this internship more highly."
Paul Johnson, Intern March – June 2010
